My 65 lb-er!! |

So one of the good things about staying at hostels, was all the money we saved to do other fun stuff around town. One of the things on Jeremy's bucket list was fishing, he had a lot of convincing on his part because I wasn't too thrilled. Dont get me wrong, I love to fish. I mean I really do, I grew up fishing with my dad since I was a child. But to spend about 300 bucks on hanging out on a boat all day just isn't my thing. I probably could've lived without going.
The day started out on the Stress Reeliever, Jeremy found this guy online, who was pretty reasonably priced for an all day trip. We emailed him a couple months ahead of time, and he set us up with another couple from Montana who wanted to go around the same time as us.

As we were waiting on the dock, we noticed a bunch of whales breaching just off shore. They were very far away, but you could clearly see them out of the water, so Im sure they were huge. I was bummed too cause we never saw them on the way out to the fishing area. Once on the boat we spent the next hour and a half motoring out there. It didnt really rain at all on the way out (on the way in is another story) so it was pretty nice. We got out there and immediately dropped the lines. Almost immediately I noticed something following the boat. To me, it looked like a huge fish, but Jeremy tried to convince me it was a dolphin. I mean it was pretty close to the size of a dolphin, but way skinnier. I pointed it out a couple times, but no one really listening to me!

At about 9 o'clock we got a hook up. And it was a do-sey. I ran over to the rod, figuring if it was the only catch of the day at least I got something (good call on our part-cause it was). We saw it jump almost immediately and noticed how awesome the fish was. Jeremy and I both reeled him in for about 10-15 minutes and when he got closer, he was a HUGE Dorado. The deck hand gaffed him and brought him on the boat and I was thrilled! He got a couple good whips of the tail on my legs before he finally stopped. We estimated it to be around 60-70 pounds...I guess the average is about 20-30 pounds, he said this one of the biggest Mahi Mahi he's ever seen. The deckhand filleted it up for us, and got two pretty decent sized fillets for the both of us.

After that excitement, we really didnt have any action after that. I felt kind of bad actually, because the other couple really didnt do anything...they just kind of watched us fish. We had a couple sail fish come in and eat our bait, but nothing really all day. Essentially it turned into a dolphin and sea turtle trip cause we didnt catch anything. It was pretty neat cause when we came back in, there was a huge pod of dolphins playing with the boat. It was neat to watch them play and a few times even locked eyes with one of them....admittingly it was really cool.
The drive in was more miserable then on the way out. I totally saw it coming too, cause there was a huge dark cloud a few miles away from us...that we were heading straight towards. This was our first taste of Costa Rican rain, and I wasn't a fan. It was a torrential downpour and was not pleasant to be in. Our original plan was to walk back to the hostel but the Montana couple was nice enough to drive us back to town cause it was miserable outside.

We ducked into a cool little bar that agreed to cook our Mahi Mahi for us. The lady in the kitchen was amazing. We got two fillets of Mahi Mahi, salad, rice, potatoes, with an avocado and sauce....all for $4! And washed it all down with an Imperial. I was full!
We went back to the hostel and checked emails before going to bed.
